Materials: Birch, Leather, Artificial Sinew, Hemp Cord
At the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth, England, there are a number of artifacts that consist of a wooden cylinder with various sized grooves running nearly their length. The conclusion of the Mary Rose curators is that these are tool holders that would have been covered in leather and used to carry various tools on a belt. Some grooves are very narrow, others relatively wide; I would guess they might be used to carry caulking irons, chisels, gouges, etc.

I thought I would give this idea a try to see how practical it
would be. I used a scrap of turned birch I had lying around, in
which I cut two dados and then covered with a sheath of leather.
The result is actually very useful, both protecting the chisels
as they rattle around in my tool box, and keeping them handy when
on my belt.
