Turned Mallets

Materials: European Pear, Red Oak

Pear mallet was the first experiment on the treadle lathe. Pear has a very fine grain and turns beautifully. Too light to be a useful tool, but a pretty showpiece and good example of fine-grained wood. Finished with linseed oil.

Oak mallet was the first project to go from solid log to finished piece. Balk split out from log off the wood pile. Though open grained, it turned nicely with a sharp gouge. Has a nice medium weight, useful for light work and knockdown furniture. Finished with linseed oil.
